Themes in The Waste Land - Literature Essay Samples

The Waste Land, at first glance, can often be mistakenly perceived as fragmented and scattered and having no coherent pattern or meaning between the five short poems. T.S. Eliot’s creative style of writing creates this impression, as there is no specific narrator or protagonist throughout the poems and chooses instead to allow several different voices to tell of their personal experiences. However, when the poems are read in relation to each other, while trying to understand the historical context at the time, the five contrasting poems somehow seem to suddenly morph together with brighter clarity and deeper meaning. T.S. Eliot expertly uses several themes and motifs in these poems to help illustrate the kind of society that existed immediately following WWI. By analyzing three of the most prevalent themes presented in The Waste Land, such as, lust, death, and fragmentation, one can better visualize and comprehend what society was like in the eyes of T.S. Eliot during this tim e. The theme of lust can be found in several parts of The Waste Land, especially in the poem, The Fire Sermon. In the Fire Sermon, it starts off by describing the river Thames and how it is devoid of Nymphs, garbage, and of all life in the river. It then describes a rat crawling up onto the vegetation and across the bones and bodies of people on the ground. This is quite a grisly scene. It then describes the shocking scene of a young sailor, described as a carbuncle, who violates a young typist and has a sexual encounter with her. This scene is almost described as rape as it describes the young men caressing the typist even though she has no desire to engage in this encounter with this man, but makes no objection. T.S. Eliot uses this scene to perhaps make a point on the sexuality of London during his time and how sexuality had become devoid of â€Å"life† or â€Å"purpose† and had changed for sexual fulfillment only. This scene can be related with the river scene and how the river had been stripped of all of its purity and glory and had been replaced with rats, death, and pus and disease. Perhaps T.S. Eliot believed that his world had become a world of lust, rather than a world filled with purity of love and with the purpose of creating life. This point is furthered by examining the Game of Chess poem, where it describes a wealthy woman named Lil, who describes her frustration to her friends about her husband’s sexual appetite and how she has to take birth control pills that make her sick. Again, the theme of sterility and the theme of lust are prevalent in this section. Instead of choosing to have children, she takes the birth control pills to appease her husband’s sexual appetite and her husband even gives her money to fix her teeth, to make her more physically appealing. This again reflects T.S. Eliot’s view on how the world has become devoid of the true meaning of sexuality and how it had been stained by the sin of lust. The theme of death is also very prevalent in several parts of The Waste Land. The book begins with the poem The Burial of The Dead, which describes four people that share their personal experiences while being surrounded by the death. While it describes these ghastly scenes of death and destruction, it also arouses the contradictory theme of life and of rebirth. One scene in particular presents this idea as it describes Eliot’s encounter with his deceased friend Stetson. Eliot inquires Stetson if the â€Å"corpse he had planted last year had sprouted this year and if it will bloom this year†. Eliot presents the idea of new life and meaning from death in this small section and perhaps has references to Christ dying and being resurrected again. It also describes, April as being the â€Å"cruelest month† as it brings â€Å"lilies out of the dead ground† and bringing back painful memories. This idea is also presented in the shortest poem of The Waste Land, whi ch is Death by Water. It briefly describes a drowned man named Phlebas and how the waves of the sea dragged him down to the bottom. Water is often seen as a source of life and of vitality and ironically, the water drags this poor man to his death. This idea of death and rebirth is perfectly understandable at this time due to the recent destruction and loss of life during World War I. However, through the death and the destruction of the war, there is still the hope of new life and a new beginning for London. It is probable that he was hoping for a renewal in the values and the strength of the people of London. The theme of fragmentation is also found in many parts of The Waste Land. The whole entire book in itself if very fragmented, being separated by five different poems that are completely contrasting. Inside each poem, the main speaker is constantly changing and new ideas are being constantly presented, making it quite difficult to keep track of what is exactly happening. T.S. Eliot also alludes to ancient Greek mythology several times in his poems without giving any background or explanation and relates their experiences with the characters in the poem. This fragmentation accurately describes the state of society that T.S. Eliot lived in immediately following World War I. This was a country torn apart due to the massive loss of life and resources. The country in itself was quite literally, â€Å"fragmented† and â€Å"broken apart†. T.S. Eliot helps us as the readers better come to understand this concept by the genius structure of his book, without explicitly telling his readers what he is intending to do. In conclusion, T.S. Eliot presents the themes of lust, death, life, and fragmentation in these poems in order to help us readers better visualize and understand what war torn London was like during his time. Rather than blatantly describing to his readers what it was like, he gives the readers a more complex and visual approach with stories and references alluding to Greek Mythology and ancient archetypes. Although this approach is quite vigorous and intimidating to many readers, when properly studied and thought out, the true meaning and imagery of The Waste Land becomes even more potent and clearer to the reader and that much more meaningful and precious.

In terms of intrinsic motivators, Kohn (1993) asserted that intrinsic motivators are comes from inside of an individual. Kick (2006) also states that intrinsic motivation is self-originating, self-sustaining and self-rewarding. According to Kohns view, intrinsic motivation produces the best results from employees (Nelson, 2003). A suitable working environment created by companies can help employees self-motivated, includes popular company name, good br and reputation, special corporate culture, etc. employees are benefits from these firm-specific pool resources (Frey and Osterloh, 2002). However, in real world, most of the jobs cannot be motivated intrinsically. Thus todays managers allocate the work match to individual needs and interests (Nelson, 2003) James R. Lindner (1998) examined the ranked important of motivator to employees, those contains both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators. The result shown the interesting work and satisfied payments are key to higher employee motivation. Others are includes full appreciation of work, job security, good working environment, opportunity to promotion and growth, etc. To better motivate employees, companies have to carefully design its reward systems. Methodology and Findings The source of information In this report, I mainly used two ways to collect data, which are primary data and secondary data. The secondary data could be collected through some methods such as Internet and library. Internet could cover various of information which help me easily get close to the company. In library I can find large kind of books journals that help me exact defined my topic. In term of Primary data, face-to-face interview is essential for my report. It takes place on a personal level. My interview allowed for some flexibility, which gave me much more qualitative information. Findings Extrinsic rewards Fringe Benefits These benefits encourage loyalty to a company so employees may stay longer, which also helps employees meet its social need. Starbucks offers its benefits package to both part-time and full-time employees. All employees are eligible for insurance coverage after being paid 60 hours. Starbucks comprehensive benefits package includes: medical, dental, vision and shor-term disability insurance, as well as paid vacation and holiday, mental health/chemical dependency benefits, a 401k savings plan and a stock option plan. Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks believes that without these benefits, people do not feel financially or spiritually tied to their jobs. He mentioned that stock options and the complete benefits package increase employee loyalty and encourage attentive service to the customer. Extrinsic rewards Pay for performance According to research firm The corporate Library, different company has different way to give bonuses. Costco Wholesale Corporation awards bonuses based on factors such as goals related to sales, controllable expenses and inventory shrinkage; Paccar Inc. gives bonuses based on a simpler measure: net profit; further more, Amazon.com Inc. does not provide performance-based bonuses. Starbucks as a successful company is tying compensation directly to employee performance to drive incredible business results. Pay-for-performance is providing to be effective at all levels and in all functions of Starbucks. Building a pay-for-performance culture may seem like an abstract vision for some companies, however, in Starbucks, it is a considered a top tool by senior executives for achieving better financial results. And for good reason: a strong pay-for-performance culture has the ability to unlock their employee performance potential, keep Starbucks employees happy, and ultimately drive a h ealthier bottom line. In Chicago, starting pay for a baristas has increased from $7.50/hr to $7.80. After six months, Chicago baristas will make $8.58/hr if they receive a favorable performance review. In New York City, baristas will make $9.63/hr after six months on job and a favorable performance review. Pay-for-performance culture help Starbucks increased motivation by combining clear direction, quality feedback and tangible rewards, and recognition-key components to job satisfaction and employee dedication. It also improved retention, according to Giga Information Group, retention has improved by meritocratic management or pay-for-performance by up to 27%. Cost savings is another benefit by using pay-for-performance as company can only reward individuals whose performance help achieve key corporate objectives. Intrinsic satisfaction Training Policy The CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, considers that the key of success in Starbucks is not coffee but employees. He believes that happy employees are the key to competitiveness and growth. A special survey named Partner View Survey is taken off every two years thus managers can receive feedbacks through the event, and acknowledge which part should be improved or what issue should be pay more attention on. Employees even have the right to figure out what is the best policy for them, and directors show a respect for each suggestion. Besides above policies, the empowering corporate culture have aided in crafting an exceptional staffs. Starbucks promotes an empowered employee culture through generous benefits programs. Employees are empowered by management to make decisions without management referral and are encouraged to think of themselves as a part of the business. Conclusion Starbucks changes the behaviors and viewpoints of global consumers to coffee, and this successful example has caught global attention. According to my study of Starbucks, it shows that motivation is the key factor of a company policy. In other word, opposite to the principles of classical management which only concerns about produce but ignore workers ideas. In recent successful business, the appropriate management for labors should include both financial and emotional rewards. Besides, motivation and personal satisfaction should be put into first rank. A good relationship between managers and employees could maintain a high quality of performance. Just like Starbucks, to use the correct strategy would lead to a successful path. Recommendation As we know, Starbuck is the company which part-time workers favorite cover jobs at. Starbucks may find that its growth plans will hinder its effort to provide too much benefit to part-time employees. Opening more stores means more employees and higher cost on benefits pay. In this stage, Starbuck has announced to close 600 stores in US while 61 stores in Australia, there are more than 12,000 jobs will be slashed. Aiming at this problem, I have some recommendations to Starbucks: Providing employees with a better understanding of how to use their plans and take advantage of lower-cost options for treatment. Some of these stores which certainly discouraged, however, still helpful to business can be given some more time. Another way the company is expanding without adding significantly to personnel costs is through the licensing of its Starbucks coffee shops to other retailers and companies. Starbucks stores can in local food store, in bookstore chains, in cinema and in air port. Those who work in stores are employed by the companies which rent the brand. For example, seeing or smelling food may be a stimulus to eat. In nutrition counselling, clients may be encouraged to recognise and remove the stimuli, such as ‘unhealthy foods’. Operant conditioning focuses on the law of effect, which is based on the theory that behaviours can be altered by their positive or negative effect. In nutrition counselling, a positive approach to conditioning is applied, such as a reward for accomplishing a goal. The most successful films in 2010 Essay As one of the most successful films in 2010, Christopher Nolan’s Inception planted a seed of success that grossed $63 million in its opening weekend (USA), and $820 million in total. While not being an unprecedented success in the Hollywood entertainment industries, Inception also achieved high marks from critiques as well, earning four Oscars in 83rd Academy Awards. We can say this is quite an unusual occasion for a Hollywood entertainment film in an industry that seems to have a clear distinction between â€Å"pro-money† films and â€Å"pro-art† films. The five-minute portion of the movie that I have chosen to analyze starts from 2:07:43 and ends on 2:12:43. Script-wise, it is when the tension is at a high point, descending as Cobb tells Mal that she is just a projection and that he has to â€Å"let her go. † The sequence is full of short, densely-packed scenes that contain multiple resolutions, but also reveal cinematographic values of the movie. Before going onto the sequence, Inception is driven by a complex plot which encompasses multiple dimensions of reality. A concept of â€Å"shared dream† and â€Å"dream within a dream† builds up a world in which characters can exist in multiple dimensions at the same time, adding sophistication and allowing room for fantasy inside a realistic setting. This multiple-reality concept, more than enough to entertain a certain group of audience by itself, seems very unique. â€Å"Inception is exceptional,† according to â€Å"Film. com. † However, Inception is not completely â€Å"original† as it seems. The multiple-reality concept follows the legacy of The Matrix series by the Wachowski brothers—especially when it comes to reality-controlling powers—but with more realism to the setting. The also movie contains some homage to the James Bond Series(Nolan confessed that he had James Bond homages in his interview with Screencave. com, which is best illustrated is the infiltration of military base in the third dream layer. ), while its basic elements of raising tension follow the conventional heist film styles of editing. Thus, this analysis will also see the side of Inception that resembles other successful series and its depiction of complex plot, as well as its Oscar-winning cinematography and sound. 2:07:43 starts with Cobb’s final confrontation with Mal in the limbo, one between the protagonist and the antagonist. Due to the nature of Inception, the conflict between Cobb and Mal is internal but shown externally, as his inner conflict is shown in the movie as his projection of Mal. Thus the scene is mainly composed of close-ups and short shots, showing Cobb and Mal’s facial expression in detail. Here, a noticeable shift of conflict happens on the part of the audience, as Cobb reveals that the nature of his conflict with Mal was not that he doubted reality—which is what it is known as by the audience—but that he felt guilty for her death. With that, DiCaprio’s depiction of Cobb’s facial expression drops some tension, showing the audience that his inner conflict has been solved. A noticeable editing technique here is the mise-en-scene of a knife in the middle of Cobb’s conversation with Mal, giving a quick clue that the knife will be used. Because the audience sees the knife along with Mal’s trembling hand, while Cobb does not notice it, the tension rises. In addition, the shoulder-to-shoulder shot used in this scene slyly leaves Ariadne and Fischer out of the audience’s attention in order to make the audience believe that Cobb is completely vulnerable to Mal’s knife.
